The Trio Gandhara

The Trio Gandhara, based in Montevideo, took its name from a guitar composition of the internationally known Uruguayan composer of modern classical music Hector Tosar. The trio specialises in presenting the work of contemporary Latin American composers from countries such as Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Venezuela, Panama and, of course, from their native Uruguay. The compositions the trio players cover not only popular and flok rythms but also modern forms of musical expression. The group plays original works as well as their own arrangements.

Ramiro Agriel was born in San Carlos, Uruguay and completed his musical degree under the famous Uruguayan guitarist Abel Carlevaro at the Escuela Universitaria de Music (EUM) in Montevideo. He won numerous prizes in competitions and has toured externsively in Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Italy and Uruguay playing not only solo recitals but also with ensembles and orchestras. Since 1990 he is the head of the guitar department al EUM and has been active in teaching as well as performing,

Osvaldo R. Leite was born in Montevideo, Uruguay and completed his musical studies at the EUM in Montevideo studying under Ramiro Agriel and the internationally known Uruguayan guitarist Eduardo Fernandez. He also worked under other important guitarist such as Abel Carlevaro, Alvaro Pierri and Carlos Barbosa Lima.  He participated and won prizes in numerous competitions and has been vary active both as a solist and as a member of chamber groups.

Ernesto Tardu�a was born in Montevideo, Uruguay and studied guitar under various important guitarists including Alvaro Pierri, Betho Davazc adn Christoph Jaggin.  He also took classes under his felow trio member Ramiro Agriel.  He also studied composition under Dieter Schnebel in Germany, the well-known composer for guitar Leo Brouwer from Cuba as well as with Carlos Levin in Uruguay.  His compositions won him the first prize at the "Eduardo Fabini" composition competition in Uruguay.  As a guitarist he made his solo debut in 1990 and has premiered a large member of guitar compositions.

The Trio Gandhara will hold masterclasses for solo and for ensemble guitar playing on 9,10,11,13,14 and 15 May at the Recital Hall, City Hall.
